How much formula does your baby need?

The amount of formula a baby needs depends on their age, weight, and individual appetite. Here’s a general guideline for feeding formula-fed babies:

1. Newborn to 2 Months

  • Amount per feeding: 2 to 3 ounces (60-90 mL)
  • Feedings per day: Every 3 to 4 hours (7-8 times per 24 hours)

2. 2 to 4 Months

  • Amount per feeding: 4 to 5 ounces (120-150 mL)
  • Feedings per day: Every 4 hours (6-7 times per 24 hours)

3. 4 to 6 Months

  • Amount per feeding: 6 to 7 ounces (180-210 mL)
  • Feedings per day: Every 4 to 5 hours (5-6 times per 24 hours)

4. 6 to 12 Months

  • Amount per feeding: 6 to 8 ounces (180-240 mL)
  • Feedings per day: 4 to 5 times per 24 hours
  • Introduction of solids: At around 6 months, babies begin to eat solid foods, so formula intake may decrease slightly.

General Rule of Thumb

  • For babies up to 6 months, a common guideline is 2.5 ounces of formula per pound of body weight per day. For example, a 10-pound baby might need around 25 ounces (750 mL) of formula per day.
  • Watch for signs of hunger or fullness, as every baby is different. If your baby turns away from the bottle or pushes it away, they may be full.

Signs Baby Is Getting Enough Formula

  • Steady weight gain after the first week of life
  • Wet diapers (6 or more per day) and regular bowel movements
  • Contentment after feedings (not fussy or still hungry)

If you’re unsure, consult your pediatrician, especially if your baby is preterm or has any special health considerations.
